Understanding the Trait System

In Anime Expeditions, traits are one of the most critical elements for min-maxing your team. A trait provides a permanent modification to a specific instance of a unit. Unlike equipment, which can be swapped, traits are tied to the unit itself until you decide to replace or remove them.

According to community documentation, traits occur in singular instances. If you remove a trait, that specific instance is lost, though you can always re-obtain it through a new roll. With the introduction of the 2.0 Summer Siege Update, every unit now features two trait slots, allowing players to store and alternate between different traits depending on whether they are pushing a difficult stage or farming for resources.

How to Get and Reroll Traits

To obtain a trait, you primarily interact with the Trait Reroll machine located in the Upgrades area of the game lobby. Each reroll requires one Trait Crystal. While summoning is another way to acquire traits, the base chance for a unit to arrive with a trait is quite low at 0.75%. Therefore, most professional players rely on consistent farming of Trait Crystals rather than counting on luck from the summoning banner.

  1. Enter the Lobby: Head to the Upgrades area where the Trait Reroll machine is located.
  2. Select Your Unit: Ensure the unit you wish to modify is in your inventory.
  3. Consume Crystals: Use your Trait Crystals to reroll the current trait.
  4. Manage Slots: Use the "Trait Swapping" mechanic to toggle between your two available slots once you have rolled a desirable trait.

Top-Tier Traits and Their Effects

Not all traits are created equal. Some offer minor quality-of-life improvements, while others—specifically Mythic traits—can fundamentally change a unit's viability in high-level content. Mythic traits include a "pity" system; once you reach a certain number of rolls, the game guarantees the specific trait.

Unbound (Mythic)

The ultimate goal for many players. It provides a massive 350% DMG increase, a 5% SPA (Seconds Per Attack) reduction, and a 10% Range boost. It has a pity threshold of 1,500 rolls.

Primordial (Mythic)

A powerful offensive choice offering 35% DMG increase, 15% faster attack speed, and 20% increased range. Pity threshold: 750 rolls.

Forsaken (Mythic)

Ideal for crit-focused builds, providing 35% Critical Damage, 35% Critical Chance, and 10% Range. Pity threshold: 500 rolls.

Draconic (Mythic)

Provides 20% DMG, 120% DoT (Damage over Time) increase, and a 15% reduction in overall deployment cost. Pity threshold: 300 rolls.

Efficient Farming Strategies

As highlighted by experienced players in the community, you do not need to spend hours manually farming for rerolls if you know where to look. Instead of wasting resources on gem-to-reroll conversions, focus on the following passive and active methods:

  • Daily Quests and Index: Always claim your index rewards and complete daily/weekly quests. The rewards include a steady supply of rerolls.
  • The Tower: Clearing the tower is one of the fastest ways to accumulate hundreds of rerolls. Each floor takes roughly two minutes, and the rewards for the first 50 floors are substantial.
  • Resource Drills: Ensure your resource drills in the Expedition mode are upgraded to level three. This allows for passive income of materials and reroll-related items while you are away.
  • Event Quests: Keep an eye on active events like "Forge Fever." These often provide high-volume reroll rewards for completing simple tasks.

Tips for Professional Unit Optimization

When optimizing your units, remember that "Speed" and "Range" traits are often just as valuable as "Strength" traits. A unit that attacks faster (lowering SPA) will often output more damage over a sustained period than a unit with a flat damage boost.

Tip

When using the Training Grounds (specifically at level three), you can train three units simultaneously. This is the most efficient way to grind Z-stats. Community reports suggest that you can expect a high-tier Z-stat roughly every five units processed.

Avoid the common mistake of upgrading the Quest Board building unnecessarily. Players have noted that upgrading it often only changes the reroll options rather than granting extra rewards. Save your gold for the gold shop, where you can purchase daily rerolls and equipment locks consistently.

FAQ

Can I remove a trait without replacing it?

Yes, you can remove a trait, but the specific instance of that trait is lost forever. You would need to roll again to get it back.

Does Trait Swapping work during a stage?

No, the trait swapping mechanic is disabled while a stage is in progress. You must prepare your unit's traits in the lobby before entering a map.

Are units from stages able to have traits?

No, units obtained directly from clearing stages cannot come with pre-applied traits. You must apply them manually using the Reroll machine.
